Gabriel Densley

[title]

Balanced contrast provides variations within methodologies of form, finish, and material that builds a language for functional and sculptural furniture–what Densley calls “furniturial.” By reverse engineering the function of an object and its integration into a space, he is able to consider what is being asked of both in order to fulfill the role it will ultimately provide.

The attributes of contrast fluctuate between the hybridity of objects for the home, sculptural forms as furniture, fine woodworking with carpentry skills, all search for a balance within contrast. More apparent elements of contrast include live or raw edges versus parallel milled machined faces. Using contrasting tones of wood to highlight connection and emphasize the importance of the structural connection and proportion. The search for balance within contrast informs his decisions when designing and determines which elements can or cannot be adjusted to compliment and satisfy the space the object exists in. Working backwards and developing his procedure down to the first step provides his process the efficiency required to simultaneously juggle proportion, material, surface treatment, and embracing the culmination of making before it begins.
