Epics of the Soul: the Beginning

I make paintings concerned with portraying myself, communicating emotional states and struggles of the soul. I use complex color relationships to depict personal narratives as they relate to the Odyssey, and deconstructing the Hero's Journey. I create an intuitive structure in acrylic paint which shows through to the final composition alongside the highly detailed bodies in oil paint.

To heal myself I paint my inner experience. I want people to cry tears of empathy, pain, joy, love, hatred, and realization.

What does it mean to sit with yourself?

To cry in silence,

To let your emotions run over you

A calm sea,

A flood

How can you surrender to them,

hear what they need to tell you

In this surrender, you rise.

I would like people to see my work as I see it, a mirror. We are connected, in our pain, in our happiness, and in our strength, these are the strings that stitch us together.

Bio

Isabel Victoria Perez-Poulson was born in Fort Worth, Texas and is a Chicana painter, growing up in both the border town of El Paso, Texas, and central Vermont.

Perez-Poulson is an oil painter interested in depicting intimacy, strength, and vulnerability. In the complex and colorful portraits of the face and body, she attempts to create a space where the viewer and the subject can relate, where the painting acts as a mirror. Coming from a family of painters, she carries on the legacy of self-portraiture. She often focuses on the Self, and is interested in journeys inward through painting.
