The In-Betweens

My thesis is called

the In-Betweens.

As a process-based artist

the in-betweens

are discoveries I've seen

from working old techniques

on newer materials.

Like wondering how vellum

reacts with water and

gouache, watercolors and

egg tempera, inks, glitter and

glue, acrylics, oil pastels and

colored pencils.

Does a scribble look better than

a detailed drawing?

Does pen and ink look better

than pencil or charcoal?

The In-Betweens

are also the rituals I go through

before I even start my work.

It's making sure my space is set right,

my pens and pencils in their proper cup,

paints in front of me

water in a glass jar to my right

paper at an angle, tilted.

The ink caps are off,

my phone plugged in,

headphones are charged

and the music has been chosen.

It isn't just about the finished piece.

For me, it's more about

the In-Betweens.
