Natalie King

A King Who Loves Her Queens

Throughout my life I have been meticulously curating my interior and exterior world, surrounding myself with what I find joy and empowerment in. I utilize glitter, collage, and bold, unapologetic colors. The visual density, movement, layers, imagery, and colors in my work are inspired by the energy I source from being amongst nature. My paintings are a space to express reverence for my subjects, nature, and all that inspires me and catches my attention. I create a world that I can see myself feeling safe and accepted in.

My work is an expression of devotion to the Goddesses, Divas, Icons, and Queens that rule my world. I celebrate the ways they inspire me. Every portrait is a self portrait even if my physical body is not the subject. A painting of someone is not them but a reflective surface. Reflected back to me I see parts of myself in the details, colors, intense love, and obsessive admiration I have for the subject. I render them into compositions that elevate them to a deity-like status. In this world I’ve constructed, the Divas are Gods and I want what is typically understood as campy or kitschy to be appreciated as Holy.

Bio

Natalie King (b.1997) grew up on the coast of southern Maine. She is a figurative painter, whose work illustrates personal mythologies and the Icons, Goddesses, and Queens that rule her world. Growing up in Maine made for a beautiful landscape of flora and fauna to draw color inspiration and energy from. This can be seen in the color worlds and symbolism surrounding her subjects. King is creating self-made ecosystems of joy and mysticism in her work where she is able to express gratitude, intense love, and reverence by rendering her subjects into compositions that elevate them to a deity-like status.
