Rachel Gilbert

Equivocal

My work is about the duality of fairy tales and questioning good and evil through interactive designs. It disrupts the stereotypical tropes of heroes and villains told to children. Equivocal is about exploring the use of light and shadow to show that good and evil can not exist without each other. Shadows need light to appear and light is unnoticeable without shadows This thesis aims to change people's perception of what makes someone considered a hero or villain. This is done by using a childish style in the game giving a nostalgic feeling and making the topic easier to digest. However, fairy tales were not always made for children, they were originally told to adults. These older stories often have a dark background with no happy ending. Good and evil are often intertwined together and hard to distinguish, so why do some people see the world in black and white?
