Illuminated Aurora

Illuminated Aurora is an expression of opulence, sexuality, and self-appointed status, that explores how clothing is used to create bewitching auras and captivating confidence. Throughout this collection I use a mix of enchanting color-shifting silks, leather, beadwork, and rich velvets. Heavy gold hardware and structural corsets add contrast to the softer more feminine aspects of the collection such as delicate textiles and substantial sleeves. My silhouettes are large, overtaking space and using excess textile materials, which reference historical garments of nobility. Corsets are an obsession of mine because they are incredible historical objects of complex and controversial origins. This collection is a reclamation of the context of corsets, they are generally sought to be figures of patriarchal oppression and have been inaccurately deemed to be unsafe. Corsets however never held these connotations as they were worn by many women for hundreds of years, safely and willingly. My corsets create powerful silhouettes and are used as a symbol of the complex gender politics behind fashion. They shape and support the body in a physical sense but also in an emotional sense; strengthening the wearer as they exhibit their own power. The collection commands space and attention, asserting dominion over social conformity.
